Fun Facts About Drywood Termites

Although considered a pest and causing massive damage to building structures, drywood termites do have an essential role in the complex function called the ecosystem.

They assist in the immediate breakdown of dead matter, which is instrumental in Mother Nature’s renewal program.

Being among the most social critters on the earth, here are some fun facts about drywood termites.    termites

Do not hang around on the ground…

Drywood termites are not easily discovered, because, unlike subterranean termites that require moisture from the soil, they spend most of their time creating nests and digging tunnels within old or decaying wood, quietly chomping on the cellulose that is present.

Love is in the air…

After a colony matures, the winged drywood termites become airborne, engaging in what is called the nuptial flight or swarming, in which the male and female mate and after landing they find another wooden structure to colonize.

Waste not, want not

After digesting the wood, these types of termites can metabolize the moisture from wood and reabsorb the water from their waste matter, when required.

Their feces are called frass, and when there are too many of these pellet droppings in their living space, the drywood termites create small holes known as “kickholes” in the wood and promptly kick the dropping through the openings.

Mortal enemies…

While the termites have many foes, such as frogs, birds and lizards who love to consume them, a lesser-known bane of their existence is ants.

For the drywood termite located in Malaysia, one species of ant search through deteriorating wood for termites, and after discovering their prey, they respond as a predator.

The ant will latch on to a termite’s extremities with their jaw and pierce it with its fork-like projection from within the lower part of its mouth, causing death.

Next of kin…

Scientists have made recent discoveries – the termite might not only be part of the roach family, but they should be classified as wood-eating roaches.

Although, some in the scientific community have studied the DNA analysis from the endorsed hypothesis, they have taken the conservative approach in stating termites are, at the least, a part of the cockroach genus.

As you can see, in the natural world, even things that are frustrating to human beings can be fascinating in the proper environment.

Pest Management In Florida Works Best With Orange Oil Plus

According to Entomologytoday.org, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences reports, the drywood termite is one of the most destructive insects located in Florida. Although the drywood is unlikely to spread as fast as the two other species of termites, which are predicted to cause damages to half of the structures in South Florida by the year 2040, they are still regarded as a formidable foe.  A method employing 95% pure d-limonene, made from a renewable resource can provide a solution to pest management for drywood termites in Florida.

About drywood termites…

This genus is also known as furniture termites because of their notoriety to infest dry timber and antique furnishing. They usually live in multiple small colonies resulting in thousands located in the affected wood structure.

Categorized into two groups as swarmers or soldiers, these pests can vary in color such as black, brown, yellow and as well as exhibiting a reddish hue.  The average termite can grow from one-fifth to two-fifth inches.

Since Florida has the perfect subtropical climate, the drywood termites will continue to expand by swarming to new locations throughout the year. When the queen finds a new opening in any desirable wooden construction in the form of cracks or knotholes, she will then lay eggs to colonize another site.

How do you know you have these pests?

As the drywood termites are stealth in nature, hiding from predators and never present on the ground, you might not realize you have these types of insects until it is too late! They can feed and obtain moisture from wooden components for years undetected.

After a period of progression, you might notice an affected item’s surface appears to be marred as though it has air bubbles or fragmenting issues will manifest. Piles of shredded wings along with fecal pellets expelled from the termites nest are definitely an indication you have been invaded and need professional assistance.

XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ – An Effective Organic Termite Destroyer

Many organic pesticides use alternative methods to kill pests. XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ uses a low impact and proven method to not only kill termites but to also help prevent their “occupation” of your home. Let’s have a closer look at how XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ works.

Termites Have Specific Needs

Orange oil is known as an effective organic pesticide against termites thanks to its active ingredient — d-limonene, which is a chemical that comes from the rind of oranges. It works by taking advantage of a symbiotic relationship between the termite and its gut bacteria. Orange oil itself does not kill termites, but it does kill the gut bacteria that termites depend on to break down wood into food. XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ has orange oil so it is effective against termites. Without the beneficial gut bacteria, termites cannot break down wood into food. The short story is that they die.

XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ Makes Your Home Inhospitable to Termites

XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ goes a little bit further to help protect homes from termites. Termites that live in wood need a fairly consistent environment. The wood needs to hold about 8 percent moisture for termites to survive. XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ is also a wicking agent. It moves moisture out of wood so that the wood becomes inhospitable to termites. Oil floats on water because it has a denser molecular structure. When applied to wood, the dense arrangement of molecules pushes water out of the wood. When the moisture content drops, termites die. That is the second way that XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ works to kill termites.

The following video shows how the wicking agent works:

XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ Is Also A Preventative

What is important to point out is that pesticides do not help prevent termite infestations. They only kill termites. They also leave behind a nasty set of toxins that are easy to transfer to pets and children. D-limonene, the active ingredient in XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™, is least toxic and low impact. It is the oil itself that is the preventative. When termite colonies disperse, the new queen flies out to find a new home. If the wood content of your home is not suitable for termite survival, they move on towards a new target. By being a wicking agent, XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ keeps wood in a state that is not hospitable for termites and the chances of an infestation decrease significantly. In short, XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ not only kills existing termites, but also helps to prevent new infestations. It offers both an offense and a defense.

The Benefits of XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™

There are many benefits of using XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ as a treatment for termites. Those include:

  • No toxic residue
  • Effectively kills termites
  • Is a preventative against termite infestation
  • Works against all wood boring insects — carpenter ants, wood boring beetles, carpenter bees, etc.
  • 100 percent renewable and sustainable
  • Includes a whole structure warranty
  • No tenting required so there’s no hassle in moving out
  • Very cost-effective and affordable

Traditional termite treatment is expensive and very inconvenient. The easy to use XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus™ is effective against termites and without all of the expense and hassle of traditional termite treatment.

Winter Is Coming – How Termites Behave In Colder Weather

Termites are creatures that are sensitive to things like temperature and moisture. They prefer a habitat that is moist, warm, and dark. Termites approach homes by digging tunnels through the soil; the entrances they make into a home needs to maintain a certain warmth and moisture. This is the primary purpose of what are known as termite tubes. Termites that are already in the soil when the temperatures become colder need to burrow down deeper so that they can maintain their desired temperature because termites do not hibernate in the winter. During the colder months, their level of activity in the soil is reduced greatly, but they do not die or hibernate. However, if there is an established colony in a warm home, and they are able to maintain a connection to the soil that is moist, their activity can remain steady throughout the winter months.

Homeowners might feel a false sense of security, and think that their homes are safe throughout the colder months, but can continue to slowly eat away at the wooden parts in a building while never aware of the activity. While it is true that they will be less likely to dig tunnels into your house during the winter months, the frozen soil that is stopping them will not stay frozen forever. If however, you already have an infestation, the termites can remain active regardless of the time of year. If termites are found swarming inside during the spring months, that is strong indicator of them having been in the building throughout the previous winter.

Therefore, don’t relax your vigilance when the weather has turned cold. Just because you can’t see the termites, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t there. If you suspect you might have termites, make an appointment for a pest control company to come out and perform a termite inspection. Be proactive. Call in a termite company that uses our Orange Oil Plus today to make sure that your home is free from the little pests – and best of all, you won’t have to leave your home since our Orange Oil Plus is the least toxic treatment and can be done without tenting!
